About

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall follows an imperial agent sent by Emperor Uriel Septim VII to the province of High Rock, where the ancient golem Numidium has been found and the murdered King of Daggerfall's spirit haunts the kingdom. Daggerfall Unity is an open-source recreation of Daggerfall in the Unity engine, created by Daggerfall Workshop. It reproduces the original game's content while adding hundreds of bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, native cross-platform support (Windows/Linux/Mac) without emulation, high-resolution widescreen rendering alongside an optional retro 320x200 or 640x400 VGA-palette display mode, and extensive mod support with an active creator community. It requires the free DOS version of Daggerfall, available via Steam, to supply its original textures, 3D models, and sound effects.

How it differs from the original

Compared to the original DOS release, Daggerfall Unity runs natively cross-platform without emulation, adds high-resolution widescreen support alongside its optional retro display modes, and adds extensive mod support not present in the base game — including community mods like the DREAM asset overhaul, new quest packs, a new archaeology-themed guild, and reworked combat/armor formulas.

Getting started

Get a free copy of DOS Daggerfall via Steam, then download the latest Daggerfall Unity release from GitHub, unzip it to its own folder, and point it at the DOS installation — Daggerfall Unity handles the rest automatically. Detailed setup guides for both the Steam route and a cross-platform install are linked from the project wiki.

Requires original assets. Requires a free copy of DOS Daggerfall (available on Steam) to provide game assets such as textures, models, and sound effects.
