About

Doom 64 EX+ is a community-driven continuation of Samuel "Kaiser" Villarreal's original Doom 64 EX source port, aiming to faithfully recreate the N64 Doom 64 experience while adding modern features, extensive modding support, and performance improvements. It's built against SDL3 (one of the first Doom source ports to standardize on it) and uses FMOD Studio for audio; it requires the IWAD from Nightdive Studios' official 2020 DOOM 64 remaster and supports that remaster's "Lost Levels" campaign content.

How it differs from the original

Compared to the legacy Doom 64 EX project it continues, EX+ requires the IWAD from Nightdive's 2020 official remaster rather than the old ROM-dump-based IWADs used by earlier EX versions, replaces the FluidSynth audio backend with FMOD Studio, adds PWAD support for custom maps and mods, extends the map-slot limit past MAP40, and adds shader support intended to reproduce the N64's 3-point texture-filtering look.

Getting started

Doom 64 EX+ requires asset files from a legally owned copy of the official DOOM 64 remaster (Steam or GOG); on startup it tries to auto-locate them from a GOG or Steam install. Linux/BSD builds use the included build scripts (make -j); Windows builds use the provided Visual Studio solution; macOS users are pointed to a precompiled build from MacSourcePorts, or can compile manually via a provided Xcode project. An optional Windows launcher (requiring .NET 6.0 or higher) offers additional configuration, and NVIDIA users experiencing stuttering are advised to disable VSync in the NVIDIA Control Panel.

History

Doom 64 EX+ began as a continuation of Samuel "Kaiser" Villarreal's original Doom 64 EX project. Its maintainer announced in a README update dated 05.11.2025 that the project was "done and complete" after about four years of work, citing negativity from some users over the project's licensing as part of the reason for stepping back and inviting others to fork it.

Requires original assets. Requires asset files (doom64ex.wad, doom64.wad, doomsnd.sf2) from the official Doom 64 remaster on Steam or GOG.
