About
Dune Dynasty is built on Dune II, the classic real-time strategy game by Westwood Studios — specifically on top of OpenDUNE, a project that reverse-engineered Dune II's original engine. The readme is explicit that Dune Dynasty is an enhancement of that engine rather than a remake, and that it requires the original Dune II data files (EU v1.07) to run. Dune Dynasty is a cross-platform (Windows, macOS, Linux) enhancement of Dune II built on the reverse-engineered OpenDUNE engine. It adds widescreen high-resolution graphics, Command & Conquer-style controls (multi-unit selection, control groups, rally points), skirmish/multiplayer for up to 6 players with three extra factions, emulated AdLib/MIDI/FluidSynth music with support for numerous alternate soundtracks, and support for several fan-made campaigns.
How it differs from the original
Per the readme, this is presented as a faithful engine enhancement rather than a remake — it retains the original data-file formats (including save-game compatibility with OpenDUNE) while adding quality-of-life features like fog of war, health bars, raised unit/structure caps, a 'Brutal AI' mode, and multiplayer with extra factions (Fremen, Sardaukar, Mercenaries) not present in the original game.
Getting started
The original Dune II EU v1.07 `.PAK` data files are required and must be placed in a data directory alongside the executable — the readme documents exact locations for Windows, the macOS app bundle, and Linux (including a Flatpak package). Video, control, and aspect-ratio-correction options are configured in-game or via a config file, and the game needs supporting libraries such as Allegro and FluidSynth on Linux.
History
Dune Dynasty was originally developed by David Wang and hosted on SourceForge, with its last official release (v1.5.7) in 2013; Wang kept adding unreleased features (mainly multiplayer) until 2015, after which other GitHub forks added further fixes without new releases. This repository is a fork merging those improvements and providing new packaged releases from v1.6.0 onward.
Additional notes
- Trivia
- The readme lists several alternative ways to play Dune II on modern systems: OpenDUNE (its own base engine), Dune Legacy, Dune II - The Maker, a Dune II mod for OpenRA, the PICO-8 de-make UnDUNE II, and plain DOSBox.
