About

Dune II is a real-time strategy game made by Westwood Studios and released by Virgin Entertainment. OpenDUNE is a GPLv2 re-creation of Dune II written in ANSI C, requiring only SDL/SDL2, that runs natively on Linux, FreeBSD, macOS, Windows, Atari TOS, OS/2 and Haiku. It is playable using the original game data.

How it differs from the original

It adds enhancements over the original by default, such as upscaling filters and extra hotkeys for FPS display and fullscreen, and a setting can restore original Dune II behaviour including its bugs.

Getting started

Copy the original Dune II 1.07 data files (including dune2.exe) into the data folder and start OpenDUNE. French requires the EU or HS data version and German the EU version; further options go in an opendune.ini file.

Known limitations

  • audio: If digitized sound output does not work, the game will be stuck in the house selection screen.
Requires original assets. Requires original Dune II 1.07 data files (including dune2.exe) copied to the data directory.

Additional notes

Known bug
If digitized sound output fails, the game gets stuck on the house selection screen because it waits for a voice clip to finish.
Music
Supports MT-32 music via the Munt emulator and FluidSynth soundfonts.
