About
M.U.G.E.N is a freeware 2D fighting game engine created by Elecbyte, built around community-made content — thousands of original and licensed fighters have been created for it. Ikemen GO is an open-source fighting game engine written in Go that runs M.U.G.E.N-compatible resources such as characters and stages. It targets broad compatibility with M.U.G.E.N 1.1 Beta while extending its feature set, is actively developed, and runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android. The engine itself is MIT-licensed, with its bundled screenpack assets under Creative Commons and dynamically linked FFmpeg under LGPL v2.1.
How it differs from the original
Ikemen GO does not aim for bug-for-bug compatibility with M.U.G.E.N: it intentionally diverges from M.U.G.E.N's exact behavior where doing so avoids preserving bugs, quirks, or unnecessary limitations.
Getting started
Ready-to-use builds — stable releases, release candidates, and nightly builds — are available from the project's releases page; download the archive matching your OS and run the included application to launch it.
History
The project is a complete rewrite of an earlier engine known simply as Ikemen, forked after that engine's original author appeared to abandon it.
Additional notes
- Name origin
- "Ikemen" is explained in the readme as a Japanese acronym roughly translating to "an engine that is forever unfinished, eternally incomplete."
