About
M.U.G.E.N is a freeware 2D fighting game engine created by Elecbyte, with content built entirely by its community — thousands of original and licensed fighters have been made for it. Ikemen Plus Ultra is an actively developed, unofficial branch of the M.U.G.E.N-compatible Ikemen fighting-game engine, built on an older I.K.E.M.E.N. Plus 0.3 codebase rather than the current official Ikemen GO. It's positioned as an alternative for players whose systems can't run Ikemen GO, since it supports software rendering instead of requiring OpenGL and targets very old hardware (as low as a 1.66GHz Atom CPU with integrated graphics and 1GB RAM). The current release is explicitly a public development build with bugs and incomplete features expected; the engine code is MIT-licensed, with non-code assets under CC-BY 3.0.
Getting started
Official builds are distributed through the project's GitHub Releases page; the developers warn that any build found elsewhere may be outdated or a misrepresentation.
History
The engine passed through several maintainers before reaching its current form: Suehiro's original S-SIZE-based I.K.E.M.E.N., extended by K4thos as I.K.E.M.E.N. Plus, and now developed as this Plus Ultra branch by CD2 — separately from the official Ikemen GO rewrite.
Known limitations
- compatibility: May not work on Windows 11 (though verified working on Windows 11 Version 24H2).
- feature: Intermission combats in team mode do not function correctly.
- feature: Gamepad/Joystick configuration for player 2 may cause loss of control after button assignment.
