About
The Settlers III is a 1998 real-time strategy and city-building game developed and published by Blue Byte for Windows, the third entry in The Settlers series, later followed by two expansions and a Gold Edition. JSettlers is a Java-based remake of The Settlers III running on Windows, Linux, and Android (macOS support is broken). The project was in alpha status, with the developers warning of bugs, occasional save-incompatibilities between versions, and server aborts, and development is now archived.
How it differs from the original
The remake requires the original Settlers III's graphics, sound, and (optionally) map files to run, though the project has been gradually replacing original textures with ones under a more permissive license, tracked in a dedicated list of substituted assets.
Getting started
Playing requires installing the original Settlers III (a demo version also works) and pointing JSettlers at its graphics/sound folders on first launch. Optional command-line or options-file flags can force all players to be AI-controlled, fix the AI difficulty level, or change the locale.
Known limitations
- compatibility: Game is currently in alpha status with bugs and frequent changes making saved games invalid.
- platform: macOS support is broken regardless of CPU architecture.
