About

ZZT is a 1991 MS-DOS action-adventure puzzle game and game creation system from Potomac Computer Systems, later released as freeware, in which players control a smiley face through grid-based boards and can build their own worlds using its ZZT-OOP scripting language. KevEdit is a ZZT world editor originally developed from 2000 to 2005 by Kevin Vance and Ryan Phillips, and maintained again by Kevin Vance on GitHub since 2023 with a focus on running on modern computers while retaining DOS support. It runs on DOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Getting started

Run it from the command line, optionally passing a .zzt file to open; press H inside the editor for interactive help. Building from source requires pkg-config and SDL2, plus running the bootstrap, configure, and make scripts in sequence.

History

KevEdit was developed from 2000 to 2005 by Kevin Vance and Ryan Phillips, then picked up again by Kevin Vance on GitHub starting in 2023.
