About

RimWorld is a 2018 construction-and-management colony simulation by Tynan Sylvester's Ludeon Studios, originally funded on Kickstarter in 2013, designed as a "story generator" run by an AI storyteller rather than as a skill-based challenge. Magical Life is a fantasy colony-management game in active early development, envisioned by its creator as what a RimWorld-style colony sim would look like with more RPG elements added - character classes, skill-based leveling, and a magic system alongside a tech tree. It's built in C# with MonoGame for hardware-accelerated graphics, targets multiplayer play including a dedicated server mode, and per its own roadmap is still missing several core systems such as traders, AI-controlled creatures, and dungeons.

How it differs from the original

Unlike RimWorld, Magical Life pairs its colony-sim mechanics with an RPG framework of character classes (wizard, cleric, thief, paladin, and others), a per-character skill system, and both a technology tree and a spellcasting system (permanent and temporary spells) for magic users.

Getting started

Running the released build requires the .NET Framework 4.7.1 runtime; a gameplay demo showing the project's current state is linked from the README. Building from source needs Visual Studio 2017, MonoGame 3.7.1, and the 2012 Visual C++ x64 redistributable.
