About

Super Mario Bros. is Nintendo's 1985 NES platform game, directed by Shigeru Miyamoto and the first game in the Super Mario series. Moondust Project (formerly PGE Project) is a free, open-source game engine and development kit for making platform games, by Vitaly "Wohlstand" Novichkov. It includes the Moondust Engine, a level and world-map editor, a playable-character calibrator, a music player and several graphics conversion utilities; the engine itself is still experimental and incomplete.

How it differs from the original

Rather than recreating a single game, it is a toolkit for building new platformers. Both the engine and editor offer a compatibility layer with the legacy SMBX Engine 1.3 when used with configuration packs following the SMBX64 standard.

Getting started

Stable and experimental builds can be downloaded from the project's website, and configuration packages are required to use it. Build instructions for Linux, Windows and macOS are on the project wiki.
