About
X-COM: Apocalypse is a 1997 sci-fi tactical strategy game by Mythos Games, published by MicroProse for DOS and set in the future city of Mega-Primus. OpenApoc is an alpha-stage reimplementation of X-COM: Apocalypse written in C++ and SDL2, which needs the original game files to run. It supports modern resolutions at 60 fps and has broad modding support, but not all features are implemented yet and bugs and crashes are expected.
How it differs from the original
It adds a 'More Options' menu with dozens of optional gameplay tweaks, an experimental skirmish mode, human-readable XML savegames, and a debug system. The team also aims to restore features cut from the original game.
Getting started
On Windows, download the installer from the project's releases, then give it a legitimate X-Com Apocalypse disc image (a CD rip, Steam's cd.iso, or GOG's .cue/.bin files) placed in its data folder. Linux and macOS users build from source and copy cd.iso into the data folder.
History
The project was founded by PmProg in July 2014. In a 2017 Reddit AMA, original X-COM designer Julian Gollop said he supports it.
Additional notes
- Requirements
- An OpenGL 2.0-capable graphics card is required; pirated disc images missing the music files are not supported.
