About

The X-COM series are 1990s science-fiction tactical strategy games from Mythos Games/MicroProse — including UFO: Enemy Unknown (1994), Terror from the Deep (1995), and Apocalypse (1997) — in which the player commands a paramilitary organization defending Earth from alien invasion, mixing real-time base management with turn-based tactical combat. Xenowar (formerly UFO Attack / unflobtactical) is a free and open-source turn-based strategy game for Win32 and Android (2.1+) influenced by X-COM, which started as an experiment to understand mobile GPUs on a phone and grew from there; a signed version is also available on the Android app store.

How it differs from the original

Unlike the original DOS-based X-COM games, Xenowar targets Win32 and Android, reflecting its origins as an experiment in mobile GPU rendering.

Getting started

On Win32, unzip the release and run the executable (the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable may be needed); on Android, install the APK from the project's Google Code page, or use the signed version from the app store. Custom graphics mods (.xwdb files) can be dropped into the 'mods' folder on Win32 or downloaded directly on Android, and can be authored with the included ufobuilder.exe tool.

History

Xenowar began as an experiment to understand mobile GPU rendering on a phone, and grew from there into a full X-COM-influenced strategy game.
