About

Gothic is a 2001 action role-playing game developed by Piranha Bytes for Windows, the first game of the Gothic franchise. OpenGothic is an open-source re-implementation of Gothic 2: Night of the Raven, aiming to be a feature-complete game client compatible with the original game data and mods. The main quest and addon can both be completed, and it runs on Windows (DX12, Vulkan), Linux (Vulkan) and macOS (Metal).

How it differs from the original

It is designed around modern graphics hardware features such as mesh shaders and ray tracing, and reinterprets some original graphics menu options (for example, Cloud Shadows maps to SSAO). Gothic 1 is not officially supported, and mods relying on Ikarus/LeGo memory hacking, Union, the DX11 Renderer, AST SDK or Ninja do not work.

Getting started

Install Gothic 2: Night of the Raven, then download an OpenGothic pre-release and run it; it auto-detects common install paths, or you can point it at your game folder with the -g parameter. Linux users can use a .deb package or the AUR, and macOS builds are available from Mac Source Ports.

History

The project was motivated by the difficulty of getting the original Gothic 1 and 2 running on modern systems.

Known limitations

  • modding: Ikarus/LeGo memory hacking mods are not supported; Union, DX11 Renderer, AST SDK, and Ninja are not compatible.
  • graphics: Designed for modern graphics hardware; low-end or outdated graphics cards may not perform well.
Requires original assets. Requires Gothic 2: Night of the Raven game files.
