About
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is a 2002 action role-playing game by Bethesda Game Studios, set on the island of Vvardenfell. OpenMW is an open-source open-world RPG engine that plays Morrowind on Windows, Linux and macOS. The main quests of Morrowind, Tribunal and Bloodmoon are all completable, with occasional side-quest issues expected ahead of a 1.0 release.
How it differs from the original
It adds improved graphics and user interfaces, and ships OpenMW-CS as a replacement for Bethesda's Construction Set. Mods made for the original engine are hit-and-miss, since OpenMW's script compiler checks errors more strictly and some mods rely on original engine bugs.
Getting started
You must own Morrowind; the launcher should find the game files automatically if both games are installed properly, including a Morrowind install under Wine. Installation instructions are on the project's documentation site.
Known limitations
- compatibility: The OpenMW script compiler performs more thorough error-checking than the original Morrowind, causing some mods created for Morrowind may not run in OpenMW.
- compatibility: Some mods rely on quirky behavior or engine bugs in the original game to work, which may not function in OpenMW.
