About
Final Fantasy VII is a 1997 role-playing game for the PlayStation, developed by Square, following the mercenary Cloud Strife's fight against the megacorporation Shinra to stop it from draining the planet's life energy. Q-Gears is an open-source, cross-platform engine that reimplements the engine behind Square's PlayStation-era RPGs like Final Fantasy VII and IX and Xenogears, targeting modern Windows, Linux, and OSX systems. It does not include original game assets and is currently unplayable, with development halted.
How it differs from the original
Unlike the original, which requires PS1 hardware or emulation, Q-Gears aims to run the same underlying engine natively on modern Windows, Linux, and OSX systems.
Getting started
Nightly builds for Linux and Windows are hosted separately from the main repository, or the project can be compiled from source; either way it requires the original Final Fantasy VII assets to actually load and play, and its current build status is listed as unplayable.
