About
Driver 2 is a 2000 action driving game by Reflections Interactive, the second installment in the Driver series, originally released for PlayStation with a Game Boy Advance port following in 2002. REDRIVER2 is a complete reverse-engineered reimplementation of Driver 2, disassembled from the original PlayStation MIPS binary and translated back into C without any emulation involved. It runs on Windows and other platforms via a compatibility layer called Psy-X (Psy-Cross), with a Linux port and a planned backport to PlayStation; the project states the game has been significantly improved over the original, with bugs fixed and some previously unfinished gameplay aspects completed.
How it differs from the original
Unlike the original PlayStation release, REDRIVER2 fixes original bugs, completes some unfinished gameplay aspects, and supports basic modding — replacing textures and models via the companion OpenDriver2Tools.
Getting started
See the project wiki's installation instructions for setup; the original Driver 2 game data files are required to run it. Basic modding — replacing textures and models — is supported via OpenDriver2Tools.
History
Development began with a year of preparations before a skeleton was created in February 2019; the reimplementation was fully playable by September 2020, with a refactoring pass completed in January 2021.
