About
Super Mario 64 is a 1996 platform game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 — the first 3D game in the series, in which Mario collects Power Stars scattered by Bowser across paintings inside Princess Peach's castle to rescue her. sm64ex is a PC port of Super Mario 64 (a fork of sm64-port) that adds an options menu with button remapping, a choice of renderers (including OpenGL 1.3 for older hardware, plus GL2.1, D3D11, and D3D12), and support for both little- and big-endian save files. It requires extracting assets from a legally owned ROM once, after which the ROM is no longer needed.
How it differs from the original
Beyond faithfully reproducing the original, it adds features the N64 release never had — an optional analog camera and mouse-look control, an option to skip the introductory cutscenes, a cheats menu, and support for external custom texture packs.
Getting started
Assets need to be extracted once from your own Super Mario 64 ROM using the included extraction script, after which the ROM itself isn't needed to play. Build instructions for Windows, Linux, and other platforms are covered in the project's wiki.
