About
Sonic the Hedgehog is a 1991 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis, in which the player runs and jumps as Sonic through themed levels, collecting rings, to stop Doctor Robotnik. Sonic Robo Blast 2 is a 3D Sonic the Hedgehog fangame built on a modified version of the Doom Legacy engine, developed independently by Sonic Team Junior, which states it isn't affiliated with Sega or Sonic Team and doesn't claim ownership of the Sonic IP it uses. It runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS.
How it differs from the original
Rather than reproducing the original 1991 game's 2D levels and engine, it reimagines Sonic in an original 3D engine derived from id Software's Doom via the Doom Legacy source port.
Getting started
Compiling it from source means following the project's own wiki-based build guide; Linux and macOS builds additionally need SDL2, SDL2-Mixer, libupnp, libgme, and libopenmpt installed.
