About
Stronghold is a 2001 real-time strategy castle-building game by Firefly Studios for Windows and Mac OS X, combining military conquest with economic and infrastructure management in a setting that strongly resembles medieval England. Sourcehold is an open-source engine reimplementation of Stronghold, aiming to make the game playable on platforms it didn't originally support. It's in an early, incomplete stage of development and is not intended as a fully accurate source port. Development is currently frozen pending the release of Firefly's own Stronghold: Definitive Edition.
How it differs from the original
As an engine reimplementation rather than a source port, Sourcehold intentionally diverges from the original in places and adds Steam Workshop support for custom content, which the original release didn't have. It does not require the original Stronghold game assets to run.
Getting started
Building it requires several libraries (SDL2, OpenAL, FFmpeg, and others) plus platform-specific build scripts for Windows, macOS, and the iOS simulator; once built, it needs to be pointed at a folder containing the original Stronghold's data files to run.
Known limitations
- development: Project is frozen pending the release of Stronghold Definitive Edition from Firefly.
Additional notes
- Community
- The project runs its own Discord for development, separate from the Stronghold Crusader-focused UCP Discord community it also links to.
