About

Quake III Arena is a 1999 first-person shooter by id Software, the third Quake game, notable for dropping a story-driven single-player campaign in favor of primarily multiplayer combat against bots or other players. Spearmint is a fork of Lilium Arena aiming to provide a flexible engine for new games and mods while supporting several id Tech 3-based titles. It can currently run Quake III Arena, Quake III: Team Arena, and Turtle Arena, with partial, unfinished progress toward Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

How it differs from the original

It is not compatible with existing mods (QVM/DLL files) or demo recordings from Quake III Arena or the other supported games, and major version releases intentionally break VM and network compatibility with earlier Spearmint releases.

Getting started

Pre-built packages for Windows, Linux, and macOS are available from the project's website; a build guide is included in the repository for compiling from source.

Known limitations

  • compatibility: Not compatible with existing mods (QVM/DLL files) or demos from Quake III Arena, Team Arena, or other id Tech 3 games.
  • compatibility: Progress toward RTCW and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory support is incomplete.

Additional notes

Trivia
The project's name is partly inspired by the character Gum from Jet Set Radio.
