About

Stunt Car Racer is a racing video game developed by Geoff Crammond, published in 1989 by MicroProse for the Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, MS-DOS, and ZX Spectrum (with an Amstrad CPC port following in 1990), in which two players race head-to-head on elevated tracks with ramps as the main obstacle. This is a BBC Micro port of Stunt Car Racer, rearranging the Commodore 64 version's reverse-engineered 6502 disassembly into the BBC Master's 128K memory map, with new graphics, sound, and I/O code written specifically for BBC hardware, plus new music.

How it differs from the original

No original assets were used; the game was rebuilt from reverse-engineered logic and data structures rather than ported code, with entirely new artwork drawn to fit the BBC's palette limitations.

Getting started

Controls use S and D to steer, RETURN to boost, and the colon or asterisk key to brake, with additional keys for pausing (P/O), redefining keys (F1 while paused), and toggling the menu music (M).

History

The port was made as a tribute to designer Geoff Crammond roughly 30 years after the original 1989 release, building on Fandal's earlier reverse-engineered Atari XE conversion of the Commodore 64 version as its starting point.
