About

Stunt Car Racer is a racing video game developed by Geoff Crammond, published in 1989 by MicroProse for the Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, MS-DOS, and ZX Spectrum (with an Amstrad CPC port following in 1990), in which two players race head-to-head on elevated tracks with ramps as the main obstacle. stuntcarremake is a Linux and OpenPandora port of "Stunt Car Racer Remake," itself a Windows remake of the original Stunt Car Racer. It builds via platform-specific make targets (Linux, ODroid, PocketCHIP, Pandora) and can optionally use SDL2 instead of SDL1; a WebAssembly build (via Emscripten and gl4es) is also available to play in a browser.

How it differs from the original

The Windows build adds features not present on Linux — dynamic, aspect-ratio-preserving window resizing with scaling fonts and cockpit overlay — while the Linux version is currently limited to a fixed 800x480 or 640x480 resolution, with the scaling code present but inactive.

Getting started

To build, run a platform-specific make command (for example for Linux, ODroid, or PocketCHIP), or the default target for Pandora; adding an SDL2 flag switches the build to use SDL2 instead of SDL1. On Linux and Windows, steering and acceleration use the arrow keys with Space for boost; on Pandora, the D-pad steers with dedicated buttons for accelerate, brake, and boost.

History

Originally hosted on SourceForge as "Stunt Car Racer Remake," part of the code (the OpenAL audio handling) was reused from a Forsaken/ProjectX port by a contributor named chino, and Windows-specific enhancements were added by another contributor in late 2025.

Known limitations

  • platform: Linux builds use fixed resolution (800x480 or 640x480); dynamic window resizing is only available on Windows.
