About
Super Mario Bros. is a 1985 platform game developed and published by Nintendo for the NES, directed by Shigeru Miyamoto, in which the player guides Mario (or Luigi) through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool from King Koopa. SuperTux is an open-source jump'n'run platformer strongly inspired by the Super Mario Bros. games, starring the Linux mascot Tux, who must rescue his companion Penny from the villain Nolok's fortress by running and jumping through multiple worlds, defeating enemies, and collecting power-ups. It's actively developed and builds for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, FreeBSD, and WebAssembly.
How it differs from the original
Unlike the Mario games it's inspired by, SuperTux stars an entirely original cast (Tux, Penny, and the antagonist Nolok) with its own story and assets rather than reusing Mario characters or content.
Getting started
Stable builds are available for major platforms from supertux.org or GitHub Releases; both keyboard and joystick/gamepad input are supported, with controls adjustable via the options menu. On macOS, Gatekeeper may block the app since it isn't signed — it can still be opened via the right-click "Open" context-menu option.
