About
Advance Wars is Nintendo's turn-based tactical war series, built around isometric maps, rock-paper-scissors unit matchups, and commanding officers with special powers. Tanks of Freedom is an open-source, isometric pixel-art turn-based strategy game built in Godot Engine, pitting a newly formed rebel government against loyalist forces backed by a neighboring country. It supports a single-player campaign against AI, local hot-seat multiplayer, and a built-in map editor for creating and sharing custom maps. A sequel, Tanks of Freedom II, has since been released with a new story and more units.
How it differs from the original
Sound and music were composed on real Game Boy hardware rather than synthesized digitally, and the whole game — engine, assets, and tooling — is open source, including a public map editor and online map browser for community content.
Getting started
Download builds for PC directly from the itch.io page; an online map browser is available for pulling in community-made maps for multiplayer battles. Full source code is on GitHub for anyone who wants to build it themselves.
History
Development began at Global Game Jam 2015, where a working prototype was built in 48 hours; the small team kept developing it in their spare time afterward, eventually releasing the sequel Tanks of Freedom II.
