About

Pokémon is a Japanese role-playing game series created by Satoshi Tajiri and developed by Game Freak, beginning with Pocket Monsters Red and Green on the Game Boy in 1996, in which players capture and battle creatures. Tuxemon is a free, open-source monster-collecting and battling RPG built in Python, with all game data stored as JSON and maps built in the Tiled map editor. It ships with 393 original monsters, 274 battle techniques, and 223 items, supports mods, multiple languages, and keyboard, mouse, and gamepad input, and runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, and (with some support) Android.

How it differs from the original

Rather than using Pokémon's creatures or assets, Tuxemon has its own original roster of 393 monsters, 274 techniques, and 223 items, all defined in editable JSON game data.

Getting started

Follow the installation guide included in the project's documentation to set it up, then play with the arrow keys to move, Enter to select, and Shift to sprint — mouse and gamepad input work too. A CLI interface and enableable developer tools are also available for live debugging.

History

The project's license notice credits William Edwards and Benjamin Bean with copyright dating back to 2014, indicating ongoing development since then.
