About

3DGE builds on id Software's GPL-released id Tech 1 engine, the technology behind DOOM, Heretic, Rise of the Triad, and Wolfenstein 3D — landmark early-1990s first-person shooters. 3DGE (formerly Hyper3DGE/EDGE) is an advanced OpenGL source port built on the GPL-released id Tech 1 engine, aimed at modders and end-users who want an easy platform for new content. It's scriptable via its own DDF/COAL system and traces its lineage through DOSDoom (1997-1999). A sister project, Edge-Classic, forked from an earlier EDGE branch and continues in parallel.

How it differs from the original

Compared to the original engine, EDGE adds OpenGL rendering plus a DDF/COAL scripting layer intended to make new content and mods much easier to build than editing the base engine directly.

Getting started

Requires your own legally obtained IWAD files (DOOM, Heretic, etc.) — the engine itself contains no copyrighted game data. Prebuilt Windows/Linux binaries are occasionally published externally (linked from the project's build guide); building from source requires the libraries listed there for your platform and compiler.

History

EDGE traces back to DOSDoom, an engine created by Chi Hoang and the DOSDoom Team in 1997-1999, and has been maintained under the EDGE name since 1999. Edge-Classic later forked from an earlier EDGE branch and continues independently.
