About
UZDoom targets three classic id Software/Raven Software first-person shooters built on the same engine lineage: 1993's Doom, 1994's Heretic, and 1995's Hexen: Beyond Heretic. UZDoom is a modern, GPLv3-licensed source port continuing the ZDoom and GZDoom lineage, adding features such as high-resolution graphics, dynamic lighting, 3D floors, extensive modding support, and modern OpenGL/Vulkan renderers. It runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS and is under active development.
How it differs from the original
Compared to the original 1990s DOS engines, UZDoom adds high-resolution graphics, dynamic lighting, 3D floors, and modern OpenGL/Vulkan rendering backends, while still requiring the original game's data files to run.
Getting started
It requires the original game's data files placed alongside the engine; full build and compatibility instructions for Linux, Windows, and macOS are maintained on the project's wiki.
History
UZDoom continues the lineage of ZDoom, created by Marisa Heit, and GZDoom, continued by Christoph Oelckers, building on id Software's decision to release Doom's original source code.
