About
Doom is the game DRL reimagines as a turn-based roguelike; the readme itself avoids naming it directly, calling the project "DRL a.k.a. 'That Trademark'" instead. DRL (DoomRL) is a free, open-source turn-based roguelike written in FreePascal, with code dating back to 2002. Building it requires Lazarus or a Visual Studio Code plus FreePascal/Lua toolchain, along with the FPC Valkyrie library, and running the full game also needs separately-downloaded binary asset packages. The code is released under GPL 2.0; the game's original art and sprites (created by Derek Yu, later modified by Łukasz Śliwiński) are under CC BY-SA 4.0.
How it differs from the original
Unlike its FPS origin, DRL reimagines the material as a turn-based, permadeath roguelike rather than a real-time shooter.
History
According to its Steam page, the project began in 2002 as a fan project reimagining a famous 1990s FPS shooter as a turn-based roguelike, ran for 14 years, and in 2016 was forced to rename itself down to the initialism "DRL" following legal pressure over its original name. It later inspired the commercial 3D remake Jupiter Hell (2019), and this open-source release is dedicated to Jupiter Hell Classic, a further commercial spin-off/expansion of the original DRL.
