About

Chocolate Doom is a source port that aims to accurately reproduce the original DOS versions of Doom and other Doom-engine games — including their bugs — while running on modern systems. Originally just a Doom port, it has expanded to include Heretic, Hexen, and Strife. It emphasizes portability across operating systems, compatibility with original DOS demo, configuration, and savegame files, and preserving the original look and feel of input and display.

How it differs from the original

Chocolate Doom adds some command-line options not present in the original DOS versions, including a "-merge" option that simulates the WAD-merging behavior tools like DEUSF.EXE performed for total conversions, without needing to modify the original IWAD file on disk.

Getting started

A setup guide is included with the distribution for getting the game running. Its configuration file is compatible with original DOS Doom config files, and extra settings can be edited using the included setup tool. Total conversion mods distributed as PWAD files can be loaded using the "-merge" command-line option, e.g. "chocolate-doom -merge thetc.wad".

Requires original assets. Requires the original game data (IWAD files) to play.
