About

Augustus is a fork of the Julius project (itself a re-implementation of Caesar III's engine) that adds new, customizable gameplay on top of Julius's interface and performance work. It's actively developed, with builds for Windows, Linux (AppImage and Flatpak), macOS, PS Vita, Switch, and Android, plus a browser version.

How it differs from the original

Unlike Julius, which targets a faithful vanilla experience, Augustus adds gameplay changes such as roadblocks, market special orders, a global labour pool, partial warehouse storage, and increased game limits. As a result, save files created in Augustus are not compatible with Julius or the original Caesar III, though Augustus itself can load save files from both of those.

Getting started

Playing it requires a copy of the original Caesar III game files (patched to version 1.0.1.0), which the game will ask you to locate on first run. Prebuilt downloads are available for most platforms, or it can be tried directly in a browser, and a full manual is available in English, Chinese, French, Polish, and Russian.

Known limitations

  • compatibility: Augustus save files are not compatible with Caesar 3 or Julius.
Requires original assets. Requires Caesar 3 assets; must have valid Caesar 3 installation folder or copy game files.

Additional notes

Audio
Augustus optionally supports the higher-quality MP3 music files that were once distributed on the Sierra website for Caesar III.
