About

Caesar III is a city-building and economic strategy game. CaesarIA is an open-source remake of Caesar III running on its own engine (a patched SDL2 build), for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Per its own description it remains in an early, experimental development stage — playable, but with some features still missing.

How it differs from the original

It does not ship with original Caesar III graphics, video, or audio — players must supply their own copy of Caesar III (or a separately downloadable graphics set matching the Steam version) and place its data files into CaesarIA's resource folders.

Getting started

To play, copy the Caesar III .sg2/.555 graphics files plus its video and audio files from an existing Caesar III installation into CaesarIA's resource folders (or point to that location with a command-line option), then run the included updater to fetch the remaining required assets.

History

Work on CaesarIA began in 2009 as a widescreen mod for Caesar III, moved to a standalone game with its own engine in 2012, and a version was released on Steam in 2014 while the project remained open source.

Requires original assets. Requires resources from the original Caesar III game (copy .sg2 and .555 files to resources/gfx folder).
