About

Caesar III is a 1998 city-building game developed by Impressions Games and published by Sierra On-Line, the third entry in the Caesar series, in which players govern a Roman province while managing citizen needs, disasters, and hostile forces. Julius is an open-source reimplementation of Caesar III that reproduces the original's game logic exactly, including save-game compatibility, while adding UI enhancements such as widescreen and windowed-mode support. It runs on Windows, Linux (AppImage), macOS, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch, Android, and in-browser via Emscripten, and requires the original Caesar 3 game files to run.

How it differs from the original

Julius adds widescreen and windowed-mode support, various in-game quality-of-life improvements, and support for high-quality MP3 music files once offered by Sierra, while deliberately preserving the original's gameplay bugs to keep save games compatible. A separate fork, Augustus, instead makes gameplay changes but breaks save compatibility with both Julius and the original.

Getting started

Playing requires an original copy of Caesar 3's game files (from GOG, Steam, or an original CD-ROM), patched to version 1.0.1.0. Julius can then be run either from inside the Caesar 3 folder or pointed at that folder on first launch.

Requires original assets. Requires original Caesar 3 files from GOG, Steam, or original CD-ROM.
