About

The readme references the original Quake's DOS releases, specifically version 1.09 (also known as WinQuake) and earlier. Chocolate Quake is a minimalist Quake source port focused on preserving the original DOS/WinQuake v1.09-era experience, following the same philosophy as Chocolate Doom: accuracy over modern enhancements, with no hardware-accelerated rendering or modern visual effects, and original bugs and quirks intentionally kept. It builds with CMake and a C99 toolchain (SDL2, SDL2_net, and several audio libraries) and runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS.

How it differs from the original

Unlike modern Quake source ports, Chocolate Quake deliberately omits hardware-accelerated rendering and modern visual effects, while adding optional support for external MP3/OGG/FLAC/WAV music tracks named to match the original CD audio's track numbering — a feature the original DOS release didn't have in that form.

Getting started

It requires an "id1" directory containing the original game's PAK data files, placed next to the executable on Windows or in an OS-specific data folder on macOS/Linux, or at a custom location set with the -basedir/-game options. Building uses CMake presets, with a bundled vcpkg submodule recommended for Windows and macOS, or system libraries on Linux.

Requires original assets. Requires the original game data (PAK files) in an id1 directory to run.
