About

Chocolate QuakeWorld is a minimalist source port of QuakeWorld, Quake's original online multiplayer client/server, focused on preserving the classic experience without modern enhancements, following the same philosophy as the related Chocolate Quake project. It builds with CMake and a C99 toolchain (SDL2, SDL2_net, and several audio libraries), producing separate client and server executables for Windows, Linux, and macOS.

How it differs from the original

Like Chocolate Quake, it deliberately omits modern visual upgrades in favor of the original QuakeWorld look and feel, while adding optional support for external MP3/OGG/FLAC/WAV music tracks named to match the original CD audio's track numbering.

Getting started

Both the client and server require a "qw" directory containing the game's PAK data files alongside the executable (or at a custom path via -basedir); the server additionally needs a qwprogs.dat file in that directory, and custom skin packs go in qw/skins. Building uses CMake presets, with a bundled vcpkg submodule recommended for Windows/macOS or system libraries on Linux.

Requires original assets. Requires the original game data (PAK files) in a qw directory and qwprogs.dat to run.
