DarkMatter Engine

HaltedPlayableWindows

Based on Quake 3

About

DarkMatter Engine is a Quake III-based engine project intended to provide a unified platform for playing classic Quake community maps and mods, built on top of the Quake3e engine. It adds a flexible filesystem that auto-detects multiple game installations, support for Quake Live maps and assets, Ogg Vorbis audio, widescreen-aware UI/FOV, and various server-side cvars and commands for content customization. Development is currently listed as halted.

How it differs from the original

It carries over a range of engine-level improvements from Quake3e beyond the original Quake III engine, including Vulkan and optimized OpenGL renderers, raised filesystem limits (up to 20,000 maps per directory), a reworked memory allocator that eliminates out-of-memory errors, and improved server-side DoS protection.

Additional notes

Roadmap
Planned but not-yet-implemented features listed by the project include Quake II (IBSP 38) map support, WAL image loading, and PAK file support.
