About
EDGE-Classic is a Doom source port focused on advanced features, easy modding, and modern visuals while keeping hardware requirements modest; it's a revival of the older EDGE 1.35 codebase updated for current systems. It supports IWADs from Doom, Doom II, Heretic, Chex Quest, HacX, and Harmony, plus the free Freedoom and Blasphemer replacements and REKKR, and runs on Windows, Linux (x86/ARM), BSD, Mac (x86/M1), and WebGL2-capable browsers.
How it differs from the original
Compared to the original EDGE 1.35 codebase, EDGE-Classic adds an uncapped framerate, a modern renderer (Direct3D11/GLES3/GL3.3 alongside a legacy GL1.3 path), multithreaded BSP traversal, Dehacked/MBF21 and UMAPINFO compatibility, Lua scripting with a COAL compatibility layer, an inventory system, a widescreen UI, and support for many additional music/sound formats plus TrueType and spritesheet fonts.
Getting started
Play by loading a supported IWAD (such as Doom, Doom II, Heretic, or Freedoom) or one of the showcased total-conversion mods, several of which are downloadable from ModDB; the game also runs directly in WebGL2-capable browsers via the project's web build.
