About

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a free multiplayer first-person shooter originally released by Splash Damage, whose engine and mod source code were later released under the GPLv3 in 2010. ET: Legacy is an open-source continuation of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory with two parts: an updated game engine that fixes bugs and security issues, removes old dependencies, and modernizes graphics while staying compatible with the original ET 2.60b client and most of its mods, and a companion 'Legacy' mod that adds features while remaining close to the original gameplay and is extensible via Lua scripts. It's actively maintained, with builds for Windows, Linux, macOS, and other platforms.

How it differs from the original

ET: Legacy is not compatible with servers running PunkBuster or the ETPro mod, and 64-bit clients can only connect to servers running mods that also have a 64-bit build — some older 32-bit-only mods aren't fully supported on 64-bit systems.

Getting started

You need the original, free Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory game data (the pak0.pk3 file) copied into the etmain folder; some third-party mods also require the pak1.pk3 and pak2.pk3 files.

History

The ET:Legacy Team has maintained the project since 2012, building on the Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory GPL source code that id Software/Splash Damage released in 2010.

Known limitations

compatibility: ET: Legacy is not compatible with PunkBuster enabled servers.
compatibility: ET: Legacy clients cannot connect to servers running the ETPro mod.
platform: 64 bit ET: Legacy clients can only connect to servers running mods providing a 64 bit version.
