About

Freeciv21 is a turn-based, 4X empire-building strategy game built on top of Freeciv, maintained by the Longturn.net team using the Qt framework. It supports hex and square tile maps and over 500 playable nations; installers are available for Windows, macOS, and Linux (Snap, Flathub, AUR, .deb, or building from source with CMake), plus FreeBSD and OpenBSD ports.

How it differs from the original

Freeciv21 extends the original Freeciv codebase with a Qt-based interface, hex-tile map support in addition to the original square tiles, and a design focus on competitive multiplayer 'Longturn' play.

Getting started

Installable via Snap, Flathub, or AUR on Linux, or via installers on Windows/macOS; other Linux users compile it themselves with CMake and Ninja using the documented dependencies (Qt 6.6+, Lua, SQLite, and others).
