About
Hexen II is a 1997 first-person shooter developed by Raven Software and published by id Software, the third game in the Hexen/Heretic series and built on a modified Quake engine, featuring four playable character classes. This is a port of the Hexen II engine to the Sega Dreamcast. Only the OpenGL renderer (glhexen2) works, since the software renderer relies on x86 assembly not available on Dreamcast hardware; it supports full control via gamepad, keyboard, and mouse, in-game sound, and save games written to the VMU with zlib compression and an icon.
How it differs from the original
Network multiplayer and MIDI music are not supported, and CD-DA soundtrack playback is disabled by default; the author notes the port has only been tested with the Hexen II demo data, since they don't own the full commercial version.
Getting started
To play, the Hexen II data files (demo or full retail) need to be placed on a burned CD-R/CD-ROM or loaded over a network connection in the required folder structure, then launched as the appropriate Dreamcast executable; controls are configured from the in-game options menu before starting.
Known limitations
- rendering: Working with glhexen2 only because hexen2 soft render uses x86 asm code.
- rendering: Transparency bug present.
- audio: CD-DA music is disabled.
- audio: No MIDI music support.
- multiplayer: No network support.
Additional notes
- Known issue
- The OpenGL renderer has a known transparency rendering bug.
