About

Heretic is a 1994 first-person shooter developed by Raven Software and published by id Software, distributed by GT Interactive for DOS. HHeretic is a source port of Heretic maintained by the Hammer of Thyrion (Hexen II) team, continuing Dan Olson's original Hacked Heretic to keep it running on modern *nix systems. It requires the player's own original Heretic WAD file, offers both OpenGL and software rendering builds, and adds features like OpenGL-only custom screen resolutions, SDL/SDL_mixer audio with optional custom or MIDI music playback, and a transparent automap.

Getting started

To play, place a Heretic WAD file (shareware or full retail) in the same directory as the compiled binary and run it; a help flag lists available command-line switches, and custom OGG/MP3/MIDI music can be added by placing files in a dedicated music folder when built with the SDL_mixer audio driver.

Known limitations

  • rendering: Clipping issues on some maps with OpenGL; some tall rooms can be seen through skies.
  • compatibility: Saved game files are not interoperable between 32 and 64 bit machines or between big endian and little endian machines.
Requires original assets. Requires Heretic wad file (either retail or shareware version, version 1.2+ recommended).

Additional notes

Known issue
There is a known OpenGL clipping bug where tall rooms in some maps can be seen through the sky, and saved games are not compatible across 32-bit/64-bit or differing byte-order systems.
