About

Heroes of Jin Yong is a series of wuxia role-playing games, first published in 1996, based on the novels of Jin Yong. jynew ("Wuxia, Start!") is an open-source Unity-based wuxia RPG framework created as a tribute to Heroes of Jin Yong, intended as a platform for fan-made content rather than a single fixed game. Its bundled sample project, "The Wandering Soul of Ducheng," is a roughly 3-4 hour main story with multiple endings, recruitable companions, and dozens of learnable martial arts and items; the framework also ships an auto-battle roguelike mod and hosts a separate turn-based tactical open-world "Heroes of Jin Yong 3D Remake" mod. It has been released on Steam, TapTap, and the App Store, and development is marked as officially completed.

How it differs from the original

The project is not a strict recreation of the original DOS game: alongside a dedicated remake of Heroes of Jin Yong itself (built as a separate "3D Remake" mod on the same framework), its flagship sample content is an original, non-canon story ("The Wandering Soul of Ducheng") and an original roguelike mode.

Getting started

The game can be downloaded and played via Steam, TapTap, or the App Store, though the iOS App Store version is not available in mainland China. Mod creators can also build new content on the framework and upload it to the Steam Workshop.

History

The developers describe the project as officially completed, having finished all planned tasks including asset production, core systems, scripting tools, and multi-platform packaging; a planned online multiplayer battle mode was abandoned during development.

Additional notes

License
Code is MIT-licensed, but a separate Community Asset License overrides MIT terms for many of the game's assets, restricting their use outside the project and its mods; violators are named on a public project "Hall of Shame."
Monetization
The developers state the project will not generate revenue through any channel besides voluntary donations, and that its code, assets, and builds are for non-commercial, educational use only.
