About
Dungeon Keeper is a 1997 strategy game developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts, in which the player builds and manages a dungeon, defending its treasures from invading heroes while trying to conquer rival dungeon keepers; it supports up to four-player multiplayer over modem or LAN. KeeperFX (Dungeon Keeper Fan eXpansion) is an open-source expansion and remake of Dungeon Keeper for Windows 7/10/11, with its entire codebase rewritten after starting as a decompilation of the original executables. It requires the player's own copy of the original game files, which can be imported automatically from an old CD or a digital edition from EA, GOG, or Steam.
How it differs from the original
Compared to the 1997 original, KeeperFX adds higher screen resolutions, decoupled graphics and game-logic frame rates, improved AI and pathfinding, a modernized multiplayer protocol, and additional campaigns, maps, and creatures.
Getting started
You'll need your own copy of the original Dungeon Keeper's game files, from a CD or a digital edition on EA, GOG, or Steam; installation instructions and a FAQ are maintained on the project's GitHub wiki.
History
The project began as a decompilation effort that reverse-engineered the original game's executables into usable code; the entire codebase has since been rewritten from scratch.
