About

Dungeon Keeper is a strategy game developed by Bullfrog Productions and released by Electronic Arts in 1997, in which the player builds and defends a dungeon against invading heroes. OpenDungeons is an open-source real-time strategy game sharing elements with Dungeon Keeper and Evil Genius, in which players build an underground dungeon and fight for control using creatures, spells and traps. It reached a playable state after more than six years of development, but as of October 2025 it should mostly be considered archived.

How it differs from the original

It is an original game inspired by Dungeon Keeper rather than a recreation, with its own content and no need for original game files.

Getting started

Play single-player levels from the Skirmish menu, or host and join multiplayer games. An in-game help screen is available with F1, and a video tutorial and wiki cover the basics.

History

Developers have moved on to other projects; a former contributor's fork, OpenDungeonsPlus, continues development.
