About
Powerslave (Exhumed in Europe) is a 1996 first-person shooter by Lobotomy Software, published by Playmates Interactive in North America and BMG Interactive elsewhere, for the Sega Saturn, PlayStation, and MS-DOS. Powerslave EX is an unofficial remake of Powerslave built on the first version of the author's custom Kex Engine, with reverse-engineered game logic and completely original collision and AI systems. It's a hobby project not supported by or affiliated with the game's IP owners or Playmates Interactive.
How it differs from the original
All levels, textures, audio, and sprites from the original PlayStation release have been stripped out in favor of a custom level/sprite format, so it can't currently load assets straight from the original CD — though the author is investigating a way to generate the needed data from it. The core engine code is also noted as outdated and somewhat buggy compared to later Kex Engine versions.
History
This is based on the first iteration of the author's Kex Engine (3.0); a planned macOS port using Xcode project files was cancelled when the project got halted.
Known limitations
- compatibility: Core code is out of date and somewhat bugged; level format and sprite handling changed from original PSX version.
