About
Quake is id Software's 1996 first-person shooter in which a lone marine travels through teleportation 'slipgates' to stop an other-dimensional invasion of Earth, blending science-fiction military bases with gothic, Lovecraft-inspired environments. This is an unofficial Dreamcast port of the original PC Quake, supporting both a software renderer and GLQuake, and running from either the shareware data files or a full commercial CD-ROM install. It supports mods and total conversions, full controller/mouse/keyboard input, and can save to the Dreamcast's VMU with zlib compression.
How it differs from the original
Unlike the PC original, this port drops network multiplayer and CD-DA soundtrack playback entirely, and has known bugs with color rendering in the software renderer and transparency glitches in GLQuake.
Getting started
It runs from a burned CD-R, real CD-ROM, or over a PC via dcload-ip, reading Quake's original shareware or commercial data files from a specific folder layout. Extra mods and maps can be added by extracting them into the Quake directory and listing them in a simple game-selection file, and joystick, keyboard, and mouse controls are all supported.
Known limitations
- graphics: Quake version sometimes has buggy color rendering, possibly due to compiler/math library issues in lighting code.
- graphics: GLQuake version has transparency bugs.
- features: CD-DA music is disabled.
- features: No network support.
