About

This is Apogee Software's official GPL-licensed source code release, dated December 2002, for Rise of the Triad: Dark War (v1.3 CD version), compiled with Watcom C v10.0b. A full rebuild also requires Borland's Turbo Assembler unless you reuse the included precompiled .obj files.

History

ROTT began in 1992 as an id Software-approved Wolfenstein 3D sequel before id's involvement ended and the project was reworked into its own game; it went on to sell several hundred thousand copies and helped fund development of Duke Nukem 3D. The source release is dedicated to original ROTT programmer William Scarboro, who died in 2002.

Additional notes

Trivia
According to co-creator Tom Hall, Rise of the Triad was the first game with rocket jumping, jump pads, a parental password/violence-level setting, and Capture the Flag.
