About

River Raid is a 1982 scrolling shooter for the Atari 2600, developed by Carol Shaw and published by Activision, in which the player pilots a fighter jet along a river destroying enemy tankers, helicopters, fuel depots, and bridges while managing fuel. This is a Python recreation of River Raid built specifically as a reinforcement-learning environment, including scripts to train and play back an AI agent; the repository also includes a separate "Covid Raid" variant.

How it differs from the original

The project includes an additional COVID-themed variant game (covid_game.py) alongside the River Raid recreation, and is built around training AI agents rather than just human play.

Getting started

Install the Python dependencies with pip, then run play_river_raid.py to play the game yourself, or train_river_raid.py and playback_river_raid.py to train or watch an AI agent play.
