About

Serious Sam: The First Encounter and The Second Encounter are 2001-2002 first-person shooters by Croteam in which Sam "Serious" Stone battles large waves of enemies with an expanding arsenal across ancient Egypt and beyond. Serious Sam Classic: Vulkan is a fork of the open-source Serious Engine that adds a modern Vulkan renderer, based on the Serious-Engine-Vk project, with automatic fallback to OpenGL if Vulkan isn't available. It builds and runs on Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Windows, Raspberry Pi, and macOS, and is distributed via Flatpak, Snap, and AppImage in addition to building from source.

How it differs from the original

Adds a modern Vulkan rendering path (with OpenGL fallback) on top of the original engine's classic renderer, and requires the player's own copy of the original TFE/TSE .gro data files; it optionally supports the fan-made XPLUS high-definition asset mod, which is not part of the original release.

Getting started

Build from source per-platform (CMake and make on Linux/FreeBSD/macOS, Visual Studio on Windows) or install a prebuilt Flatpak, Snap, or AppImage package; then copy the original Serious Sam Classic game's .gro files into the SamTFE/SamTSE folders before launching to play with the commercial game content.

Requires original assets. Requires .gro files from original Serious Sam Classic games (The First Encounter and/or The Second Encounter).
