About

Shadow Warrior is a 1997 first-person shooter built by 3D Realms on Ken Silverman's Build engine, following on from Duke Nukem 3D; its shareware version launched in May 1997 and the full game that September. This is icculus.org's Linux port of 3D Realms' 2005 GPL-licensed Shadow Warrior source release; the porter notes it received less polish than their equivalent Duke Nukem 3D port.

How it differs from the original

It's a Linux port of the same 2005 GPL source release (with changes from the original 1997 code marked by "// CTW" comments) rather than a from-scratch reimplementation, and it still requires the original copyrighted game data files.

Getting started

You'll need the original Shadow Warrior data files (registered or shareware); the port is compiled from source like the DOS original and shares its known quirks, including sketchy modern-system audio, untested networking, and a shareware-version crash on the second episode.

Known limitations

  • audio: Sound will be sketchy on modern systems and likely to slow game performance significantly.
  • networking: Networking is completely untested.
  • compatibility: Shareware version 1.2 will crash when attempting to play the second episode.
Requires original assets. Original Shadow Warrior data files are required; this is a Linux port of the source code released by 3D Realms.

Additional notes

Trivia
The porter describes it as having received less development attention than their earlier Duke Nukem 3D Linux port.
