About
Strife is a first-person shooter/RPG hybrid developed by Rogue Entertainment and released in 1996 on the Doom engine — the last commercially released standalone PC game to use it — in which an unnamed mercenary joins a resistance movement against an oppressive religious faction called the Order. Strife: Veteran Edition is Night Dive Studios' 2020 GPL-licensed source release of its Strife remaster, adding high-resolution and widescreen support, an OpenGL video backend with dynamic lighting and bloom, and full keyboard/mouse/gamepad rebinding. It compiles on Windows (Visual Studio), macOS (Xcode), and Linux (CMake); it does not include the game data itself, which must be obtained separately.
How it differs from the original
Compared to the base 1996 Strife, the Veteran Edition finishes previously unimplemented content such as the planned "Capture the Chalice" multiplayer mode and objective markers on the automap, and adds a dedicated HUD for the Torpedo weapon; this particular source release omits any Steam, GOG Galaxy, or Nintendo Switch integration code, which is covered by separate non-disclosure agreements.
Getting started
The game data isn't included in this source release and must be obtained separately (for example by purchasing Strife: Veteran Edition on GOG or Steam); building from source uses a provided Visual Studio 2015 project on Windows, an Xcode project on macOS, or a CMake-based build on Linux.
